Practical Liturgics

June 20–24, 2010

From June 20–24, St. Vladimir’s Seminary will celebrate an intensive cycle of liturgical services, which will serve as the backbone to a series of practical liturgics programs.

Practical liturgical training at St Vladimir's SeminaryIn addition to our popular diaconal liturgical practicum, which we will be offering for the fourth year, this year we will extend this training and offer similar programs for newly ordained priests, and a select group of college age subdeacons. Participants will be able to take part in a full cycle of daily liturgical services, attend lectures on Orthodox liturgics, and join in workshops on church reading, service preparation, and practica for their specific church ministry.

Continued Priestly Instruction

This program is intended for priests who wish to participate in a week of intensive liturgical celebration and practical liturgics training. Attendees will

  • celebrate and concelebrate the services,
  • take part in general liturgics classes, and
  • engage in various workshops on voice training, homiletics and the practice of the holy mystery of confession.

Time will also be set aside for fellowship, discussion, and reflections on the ministry of the priesthood led by senior priests.

Diaconal Liturgical Practicum

"Diakonia is at the center of the vocation of every Christian," explains His Beatitude, Metropolitan Jonah, primate of the Orthodox Church in America. "The hierarchs thank God for the growth in diaconal vocations throughout our Church and this annual program that gives deacons a strong context for their service at the holy altar."

This practicum, being offered for the fourth consecutive summer, is held in conjunction with the Orthodox Church in America’s (OCA) Diaconal Vocations Program and is highly recommended by the Holy Synod of the OCA for participants in the Church’s program.

To support the growing Diaconal Vocations Program of the OCA, our Diaconal Liturgical Practicum this year will feature

  • Instruction in liturgics, public speaking and vocal technique;
  • additional tracks for deacons who are already liturgically trained to strengthen each other in faith and service to the neighbor; and
  • focused faculty presentations to augment the deacon’s understanding of his place in the liturgical life of the Church and his broader vocation as a symbol to the faithful of the diakonia of Christ our Lord.

New second session in Kodiak, AK: As part of St. Vladimir's ongoing partnership with St. Herman Orthodox Seminary in Kodiak, Alaska, a second session of the Diaconal Liturgical Practicum is being offered August 4–7 in conjunction with with the annual pilgrimage in honor of St. Herman of Alaska (August 7–9). Please see www.sthermanseminary.org for more information on these alternative dates.

College Age Subdiaconal Instruction

This program is open to five-college age men (18–25) who are experienced altar servers in their churches. Participants need not be ordained subdeacons, but should have an interest in and a history of serving in the altar.

The men who participate in this program will

  • assist at the celebration of the services during this week,
  • attend general liturgics classes,
  • and take part in practica led by current SVS seminarians.
  • Time will also be given for fellowship, discussion, local excursions, and talks on vocation and ministry.

A participant in this program will need a standard letter of recommendation from his parish priest attesting to the good character of the applicant, indicating the level of the applicant’s participation in Church life, and detailing the applicant’s experience of serving in the altar.
