E-News - April 2007
Volume 7, No. 3/4
Dear Friends,
Christ is Risen!
I pray that your Paschal season has been filled with joy and light. All of us here rejoice with you and your communities in the Risen Lord.
The academic year is winding down. Forty students, a record, will graduate on commencement day, May 19. Fr Thomas Hopko will be the commencement speaker. Students are finishing the last weeks of classes, completing their thesis, and making plans for parish life, new ministry positions, continued academic opportunities, or returning to SVS in late August. That’s right – late August. The New Curriculum has changed the beginning of the school year from the first week in September to the last week in August. All of us are excited about the prospects of the new program.
In addition, a change of leadership will take place on July 1 when Fr John Behr assumes the position of Dean of the Seminary; Fr Chad Hatfield, the position of Chancellor of the Seminary; and, Dr John Barnet, the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. As these changes take place, we ask for your prayers for those assuming new duties, as well as for those in leadership positions who have ministered well, but are stepping down; namely, Dr Paul Meyendorff, the Fr Alexander Schmemann Professor of Liturgical Theology, who will hand over the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; Fr John Erickson, who will step down as Dean but continue as the Peter N Gramowich Professor of Church History; and particularly, Fr Paul Lazor who is retiring after forty-years of service to the seminary as a member of the faculty and Associate Dean for Student Affairs. We will miss his pastoral presence and guiding leadership.
As always, please inform us of any milestones and transitions in your life so we can publish them. The seminary community extends its very best to you!

Second-year student, George Aramath, was the organizer of the event, which included a talk by Fr Paul Lazor on Confession, and talks by MTh student, Rami Wakim, and MA student, Dn Aboud Ishac. Fr Steven Belonick provided a campus tour to complete the afternoon’s activities.

REVISION OF CATECHETICAL HANDBOOKS BEGINS
The Department of Christian Education (DCE) of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) is planning a revision of the four “Elementary Handbooks on the Orthodox Church” entitled The Orthodox Faith that were published in the 1970’s. The four books (popularly called the “rainbow books” because of their different colors) were written by Fr Thomas Hopko, Dean Emeritus of St Vladimir's Seminary, illustrated by Fr. John Matusiak, reviewed and edited by Bishop Dmitri (now Archbishop of the OCA Diocese of the South) and officially endorsed by the OCA Synod of Bishops. Over the years they have been translated, fully or in part, into 16 languages. For more information, please visit: http://www.svots.edu/News/Recent/2007-0322-catecheticalrevision/.

PLEASE HELP!
In our continual attempt to strengthen relationships between our seminary and its alumni, and the relationship between alumni, the Alumni Office wishes to remember and recognize ordination dates of our alumni to the diaconate, to the priesthood, and to the episcopacy. The Office of Systems and Information Technology has the capacity to identify these significant events on a weekly basis and to disseminate them through E-News. We believe that others would like to recognize these dates as well. Please send your information to Fr Steven Belonick at his email address:
