The world-renowned Konevets Vocal Quartet from St Petersburg, Russia will perform an afternoon concert, featuring ballads, marches, and folk songs, as well as liturgical music. | | Crestwood, NY (SVS): Two choirs will entertain visitors at Orthodox Education Day, October 7th. The world renowned group, Konevets Vocal Quartet, from St Petersburg, Russia will sing musical selections during the afternoon's Festival of Music. With their performance at the seminary on this day, they begin a six-week tour in this country. This unique a capella quartet specializes in hymns and chants of the Russian Orthodox Church liturgy, as well as secular pieces including beautiful romances and ballads, and folk songs and imperial marches from Tsarist times. Founded by graduates and students of the St Petersburg Music Conservatoire in July 1992, the Quartet's aim was to establish a chamber choir with its own harmonic sound, rather than featuring individual soloists. The repertoire has therefore been created especially for this purpose, including music by eighteenth to twentieth century composers such a Bortyansky, Chesnokov, Gretchaninov, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky, to name a few. The Quartet has toured extensively to wide acclaim during the past six years, across Europe and the USA, and has appeared in many prestigious festivals, most recently at the Carlistle Cathedral Festival England, and in the Fishguard International Music Festival, Wales. Konevets' has produced six CDs and a seventh is in process. They often donate some of their revenue to charities. To date they have raised funds for the restoration work on Konevets Monastery. |
