Words and Worship
in the Christian Tradition

A Week of Study for Musicians, Educators, Pastors
June 21-26, 1998

Theme

Baptism and Chrismation

Orthodox Christianity is essentially a conviction about Jesus Christ, God’s incarnate Word who fulfills the Word of God recorded in the divinely-inspired words of the law, the prophets and the psalms of Israel.

God speaks. His people proclaim what they hear. They speak, write, sing and celebrate. They witness and worship the one true God who ultimately speaks most eloquently in His Son Jesus when He hangs in silent death upon the Cross.

Bishop Kallistos (Ware) of Oxford University will join the seminary faculty and a select group of theologians, scholars, translators, and musicians in a study of the significance of words and silence in the life and worship of the Orthodox Church.

From June 21-26, 1998, the institute speakers will reflect on God’s Word recorded in the Bible and incarnate in Jesus. They will discuss the significance of words for Christian theology and spiritual life. They will give instruction in preaching, teaching, celebrating and singing God’s Word. They will debate difficult and disputed questions concerning translations of biblical, liturgical, and theological texts into English.

Music Tract

The music section offers workshops in practical conducting skills and composing liturgical chants in various traditions and styles. Participants will be responsible for the liturgical services throughout the week. The sessions focus on questions of language, phrasing, and translations of biblical and liturgical texts.

Institute Faculty

Members of St. Vladimir’s Seminary faculty and invited guest speakers deliver lectures and lead theoretical and practical discussions.
