A Week of Study for Musicians, Educators, Pastors
June 25-30, 2000
The Divine Liturgy
From the earliest days of Christianity, the eucharistic liturgy was the central act of the Church. Here Christians, rich and poor, Jew and Greek, male and female, gathered to unite themselves to God and to one another. Here the Body of Christ was realized in each local place. The Sunday liturgy that we celebrate every week is in direct continuity with this experience of the early Church
The 2000 Summer Institute will study and analyze the history, theology, and practice of the Divine Liturgy. Lecture topics will include "the Eucharist in the New Testament," "The Historical Development of the Byzantine LIturgy," "The Interpretation of the Liturgy Through the Centuries," and "The Reception of Communion." Presenters will include Fr Thomas Hopko, Dean of the Seminary; Fr Paul Tarazi, Professor of New Testament; Dr Paul Meyendorff, Fr Alexander Schmemann Professor of Liturgical Theology; Fr Daniel Findykian; and others.
Special attention will be paid to contemporary pastoral issues as they relate to pastors, choir directors and singers, as well as the faithful.
Course and workshops in practical conducting skills and in the composition of liturgical chants in various traditions will again be offered. Participants will be responsible for serving, conducting, singing, and reading at daily liturgical services throughout the week. Music sessions will be led by Professor David Drillock, Ms Helen Erickson, Mr Mark Bailey, and others.
Members of St. Vladimir’s Seminary faculty and invited guest speakers deliver lectures and lead theoretical and practical discussions.
