The Ministry of Healing

A Week of Study for Musicians, Educators, Pastors
June 24-29, 2001

Theme: The Ministry of Healing

Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the 1999 Summer Institute

The ministry of healing has always been central in Orthodox Christian faith and life. Jesus healed the people of their physical and spiritual diseases. The apostles exercised a healing ministry. The early Christian practice of prayer and anointing the sick with oil for the healing of soul and body developed into the sacrament of holy unction which has had many forms and usages over the centuries. The various sacramental, liturgical and pastoral dimensions of the Church’s healing ministry will be analyzed and discussed at this year’s summer institute, with emphasis on contemporary issues and concerns.

Participants in the Institute follow one of two main tracks: Pastoral Practice or Liturgical Music. All students attend the main lectures given on the theme each morning. These are followed by pastoral seminars and sessions focusing on issues pertaining to parish and family life. Participants in the liturgical music section divide into groups for singing and conducting liturgical chants and compositions, as well as for developing special skills.

Institute Faculty

Members of St. Vladimir’s Seminary faculty and invited guest speakers deliver lectures and lead theoretical and practical discussions.

Worship and Resources

Throughout the week a full cycle of liturgical services provides the context for work, study and fellowship. The Divine Liturgy will be celebrated for the feast of SS Peter and Paul on Friday, June 29. During the Institute, students have the opportunity to share the resources of the seminary setting -- the library and its media resources, the bookstore, and the chapel. There is also opportunity for personal contact with the members of the faculty.

Participants are responsible for serving, conducting, singing, and reading at daily services throughout the week.
