Youth
Institute
 For
the sixth year in a row, St. Vladimir’s Seminary is offering
scholarships for a limited number of students entering their
senior
year in high school to participate in the Summer Institute.
The theme
for this year’s Institute is "The Church and Culture." The program will include participation in
the main talks and small
group
discussions, which will include discussions of film and music in their relation to Christian life and faith, as well as in
several off-campus field trips, and liturgical worship.
St Vladimir’s
is a graduate school that seeks to serve Orthodox theology through
education and scholarship. In its Statement of Purpose it acknowledges
that according to the teachings of the Orthodox Church, theology
is not a field reserved for the clerical few but is rather the
living foundation of the life and activity of the entire community
of believers.
| In
the Orthodox Church in the United States, there are few
opportunities for high school students to study Orthodox
theology in an academic setting. The Youth Institute attempts
to meet part of this need for those students who wish to
deepen their love for Christ and His Church.
The
seminary is convinced that true theological education and
reflection must be grounded in prayer, and participants
will have the opportunity to participate in its full cycle
of church services.

| Another
critical aspect of theology is its component of service,
and participants will be exposed to such programs in the
New York area. It is the hope of the seminary that what
participants learn at the Institute will be used to further
serve their home church and wider community.
Students
will be asked to do preparatory reading, to write short
daily reflections on what they are learning, and write a
3-5 page paper at the conclusion of the Institute on a relevant
topic of their interest. |

Since
only a limited number of scholarships are provided, admission
to the program is competitive. Students from all Orthodox
jurisdictions are encouraged to apply-diversity will be
a factor in selection. Room, board, and tuition are waived
for those accepted; the cost of travel and additional expenses
need to be covered by the participant, who is encouraged
to ask their home parish for support.
