St Vladimir's Seminary community was delighted to have His Eminence, Metropolitan Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia on campus from March 26 through March 31, 2007. His Eminence enjoyed his time meeting with faculty, students and staff.
"I always like to be here at St Vladimir's, visiting friends, former pupils, faculty and students, and other members of the community. I have been coming regularly to visit since 1964. The services and the singing here always lift up my heart. I do miss the presence of Fr Alexander Schmemann and Fr John Meyendorff however," said his Eminence.
Reflecting on his long-time relationship with the seminary, His Eminence continued, "I have watched the seminary develop over the years. I've known both the old and new chapels and libraries and been acquainted with most of the faculty. I am glad to see the seminary still flourishing. I am also very interested to see how it will continue to develop with Fr John Behr, whom I've known since he was a child, serving as dean."
His Eminence Kallistos gave an inspiring presentation to the student
body on prayer with particular illumination on the Jesus Prayer. "The
simple task of invoking the name of Jesus Christ helps keep our mind
from irrelevant and distracting thoughts. The Jesus Prayer helps us to
be still and know God's presence."
Students and faculty had the privilege of sharing meals and many
conversations with His Eminence. He attended several liturgical
services as well, including the Divine Liturgy on Lazarus Saturday.
While on campus, His Eminence held a formal meeting with Fr John Behr,
Ted Bazil (SVS Press Managing Director), Deborah Belonick (Associate
Editor) and Amber Schley (Production Manager). They discussed
publication initiatives and the ongoing development of His Eminence's
Collected Works project by SVS Press.
Photographs from Metropolitan Kallistos' talk and time at St Vladimir's are available.
