His Beatitude Metropolitan Jonah celebrated the Vigil for Theophany in Three Hierarchs seminary chapel, and during his homily reminded worshippers of the illuminating power of the feast. “This is a feast of enlightenment,” His Beatitude Metropolitan Jonah reminded the seminary community as he celebrated the Vigil for the feast of Theophany in Three Hierarchs Chapel on January 5, 2009. “On this feast,” said His Beatitude, “we rejoice that we share in Christ’s sonship with his Father, by the grace of the Holy Spirit. Let us foster the conscious awareness of the Word of God in our souls, giving thanks to God, and let us pray that we can bear that Word to others.” Archpriest John Behr, dean of St. Vladimir’s and rector of the seminary chapel, welcomed His Beatitude, recently enthroned as primate of the Orthodox Church in America, as an alumnus of St. Vladimir’s Seminary (’85, ’88) returning to his alma mater. “We wish you a joyous New Year, and thank you for your presence with us and your words to us. We ask as well God’s blessing on your goals and mission for the Orthodox Church,” said Father John. On the feast of Theophany itself, Archpriest Chad Hatfield, seminary chancellor, acted as the main celebrant at the Divine Liturgy and expanded upon the theme of sonship in his homily. “Throughout the season of the Nativity and Theophany,” he said, “we are awash in the glory and grace of God. We greet each other with the words, ‘Christ is born! Glorify Him!’ but we also are aware that He has glorified us, through His incarnation and redemption.” After liturgy, as is customary for the feast, Father Chad, Father John, and chapel clergy proceeded to bless the waters in the courtyard pond on the seminary grounds.
