Fifteen years ago, in December 1988, St Vladimir’s Seminary embarked on its first strategic planning effort, SVS 2000. Over the next decade, the strategic planning process continued at the seminary with an update in 1994 and in 1998. A lot of progress was made, but the needs of the Church continually grew. Therefore in December 2001, the Board of Trustees decided to initiate another major planning effort: SVS 2010. In February 2002, it was kicked off by a Trustee/ Alumni/ Faculty/ Staff workshop. The first phase of the planning effort was concerned with collecting input on seminary mission, strengths/ weaknesses and recommendations on strategic initiatives. Input was gathered via interviews with selected church leaders; focus groups at the 2002 Summer Institute, the OCA All-American Council and Orthodox Education Day; by a survey form sent out to all recipients of the seminary's Christmas newsletter in November 2002; and by a survey conducted among the Spring 2003 student body.
The next phase of the planning effort was to identify, evaluate and prepare final recommendations on strategic initiatives to be undertaken by the seminary. A set of ten teams carried out this work, each team focusing on one particular strategic initiative. Based upon the work of the teams, a set of strategic initiatives was presented for review and was approved at the May 2003 Board of Trustees meeting.
The results of this major planning effort became SVS 2010, the Strategic Plan. Detailed three-year goals and objectives were developed and endorsed by the Board of Trustees in November 2003. A booklet about the Strategic Plan was included as an insert in the Summer 2004 issue of SVSNews.
The seminary works towards the achievement of the goals and objectives of the plan, while reviewing and updating it on an annual basis. The seminary continues to prioritize initiatives by considering available resources and current needs, as well as adapting to developments and opportunities within St Vladimir’s Seminary and throughout the Church.
