In the course of the Master Class, Maestro Gorbik will work with conductors (pre-selected by required audition) and the Master Class Chorus of singers (also pre-selected by required audition) on the techniques and principles he has perfected with the Choir of the Moscow Representation Church. The topics covered and benefits of attending will include:
- The uniqueness and high calling of the sacred choral art
- “Soulfulness” (singing from the heart) as a path to achieving a “spiritual” manner of performance
- The primacy of the word in liturgical music; music as a servant of the word
- Technical particularities of Orthodox liturgical music, including chant and recitative
- Choral intonation, both horizontal and vertical
- Choral timbre, blend, and ensemble
- Choral diction and articulation
- Choral breathing and phrasing
- Strengthening rehearsal techniques
- Introduction to repertoire
- Network opportunities with fellow musicians
Repertoire will be selected from the Orthodox All-Night Vigil and the Divine Liturgy, chiefly in English, but also in Church Slavonic.
