At the recent 51st General Assembly of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America in Houston, TX, seminary Chancellor (CEO) The Very Rev. Dr. Chad Hatfield offered a presentation on the state of theological education today, to the members of the Antiochian Department of Theological and Pastoral Education. He also connected with many friends and alumni. Together with Protodeacon Joseph Matusiak, director of Alumni Relations at St. Vladimir's, he and representatives of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, Brookline, MA and St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan, PA hosted an alumni gathering at the Hilton Americas Hotel. All three seminaries are celebrating their 75th Anniversary year, and the reunion's atmosphere was celebratory and familial.
"Our alumni truly shone," remarked Fr. Chad, noting that all of the Antiochian bishops at the convention either were alumni of St. Vladimir's or had taught and mentored SVOTS seminarians.
"Clergy and lay leaders in the Antiochian Archdiocese who are among St. Vladimir's 1,900 alumni have authored books and created podcasts, led or spearheaded Orthodox ministries, and served in parishes in North America and abroad," said Fr. Chad. "And, Bishop Anthony, Auxiliary of the Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest, even commented, 'St. Vladimir's made me what I am today'!"
Seminary staff also maintained an active presence at the convention. Marketing and Operations Manager of SVS Press and Bookstore The Rev. Dn. Gregory Hatrak facilitated book signings by two Press authors: The Very Rev. Constantine Nasr (alumnus '73, Antony Bashir: Metropolitan and Missionary) and Kh. Krista West (The Garments of Salvation). St. Vladimir's Alumni Association Board Chair Gregory Abdalah (alumnus '08) was on hand to present young participants in the Oratorical Festival with gift bags from SVS Press; the contest winner received a Kindle with pre–loaded Press titles.
