A new curriculum for a new century PDF Print E-mail

2006_newstudents.jpg St Vladimir’s Seminary’s new curriculum – a new Master of Divinity, the seminary’s core degree - was developed by the faculty and is here presented in several sections. It is the outcome of nearly three years of reflection and discussion on the subject of Orthodox theological education and the task of training ministers of the Church. It is based on information collected in consultation with hierarchs, parish clergy, alumni, lay leaders, and involved faithful about the needs of the Orthodox Church.

The new curriculum significantly modifies and enhances aspects of seminary life, such as the daily and yearly schedules. It also redefines the requirements of our degree program, in particular the number of courses in the core curricula as well as the content of those courses. And finally, the new curriculum advances the notion that competent performance, rather than minimal accomplishment of course objectives, is the best measure for determining success in the practical disciplines. While these modifications and new approaches may indeed be significant, it is also true that our founding principles—the vision of St Vladimir’s Seminary—have not changed and will continue to guide the task of training for ministry and to shape the experience of the seminary for its students and faculty.
