Hope and parish growth at St Vladimir’s Seminary Lenten Retreat PDF Print E-mail

Fr Constantine Nasr Lenten RetreatOn Saturday, April 12, 2008, St Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary welcomed Orthodox faithful who came from parishes all around New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York for inspiration and ideas on how to have an energized parish. The 2008 SVS Lenten Retreat’s theme was The Energized Parish: Clergy and Laity together and was led by Fr Constantine Nasr (SVS ‘73).

Through engaging stories and amusing anecdotes from his extensive pastoral experience, Fr Constantine shared insights and practical ideas on how to have a vital parish community. He gave two talks centered on the theme of evangelism, mission and church growth.

Throughout the afternoon, Fr Constantine wisely advised clergy and laity participants to have dedication and patience. He repeated several times, “Church growth doesn’t happen overnight, and it takes hard work.” At a time when many feel discouraged by society as well as church politics, the auditorium at St Vladimir’s was full of lively discussion and smiling faces. As one participant said, “I came today looking for hope in these troubled times and this hope has been abundantly fulfilled.”

As another participant noted, “I came looking for a chance to re-energize during this period of Great Lent in the hope that I will return to my home parish and continue efforts to develop outreach programs in our parish and community. Fr Nasr was the most energetic and positive speaker, and I am leaving here today with new hope for my parish and our efforts to survive. I am confident that with God’s help, our work, and prayers we will!”

Fr Constantine Nasr holds the rank of Economos in the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. He is the full-time pastor of St Elijah Orthodox Christian Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, which is thriving under his leadership. Fr Constantine is also the author of five books including Resource Book for Mission and Evangelism and A Practical Guide for Priests and Pastors, to which he referred several times during his talks.

The day also included the Divine Liturgy, a tasty brunch, a reading of the 9th Hour, and time to peruse the SVS Bookstore.

Next year’s St Vladimir’s Seminary Lenten Retreat will be Saturday, April 4, 2009, the fifth Saturday of Lent. Save the date!
