The return of students to campus brings a renewed energy in preparing for the upcoming Lenten and Paschal chapel services. On Monday evening, January 18th, the SVS Women’s Choir will have its first rehearsal of the Spring 2010 academic semester.
The new ensemble was formed in the autumn of 2009 as a choir that is open to all women: students, spouses of students, staff and community members. On Saturday, November 21, 2009, the all-female choir of sixteen singers sang its first Great Vespers service in the SVS Three Hierarchs Chapel, featuring music for two, three, and four-part equal voices. Pieces sung included traditional Slavic and Byzantine chants, harmonized arrangements of chants, and through-composed works by composers Kastalsky, Allemanov, and Azeyev.
Appropriately, the first service sung by the SVS Women’s Choir fell on the eve of November 22nd, when the Church commemorates St. Cecilia, the third-century Roman martyr considered a patron saint of musicians.
The SVS Women’s Choir rehearses on Monday evenings, from 6:45pm-7:30pm in the Met. Philip Auditorium. Anyone interested in joining the choir is welcome to contact
