Dr. Edward G. Mathews, Jr.

Adjunct Professor of Early Christian Languages and Literature

A specialist in biblical and early Christian languages and literatures, Dr. Mathews studied at Catholic University in Washington, DC, where he did a double B.A./M.A. degree in Greek and Latin, specializing in Greek patristics, and in Semitic Languages, with a focus on Aramaic literature and Syriac patristics.  Dr. Mathews studied Armenian for two years at Dumbarton Oaks with Robert Thomson, and spent a year at Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.  He then went on to Columbia University in New York City, where he completed his Ph.D. degree in Armenian Studies under the direction of Nina Garsoïan.  Dr. Mathews has taught at Catholic University, Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Seminary, University of Scranton, Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the Armenian Evangelical Seminary in Yerevan, and at St. Nersess Armenian Seminary.  His main research interests are the early literature of Syria and Armenia, the influence of early Syriac theology on the Armenian Church, and especially Ephrem the Syrian, a number of whose works he has translated from both Syriac and Armenian; he is also engaged with Gorgias Press to translate the complete works of Jacob of Sarug, and with the Leiden Peshitta Institute to translate the Syriac Bible into English.
