“Arvo Pärt: Sounding the Sacred” Conference

We are pleased to announce an international conference to be held from May 1-4, 2017 in the heart of New York City’s vibrant Lincoln Center music scene: “Arvo Pärt: Sounding the Sacred.” This event will bring together scholars from diverse fields (music, theology, sacred acoustics/sound studies, architecture, religious studies, philosophy), as well as artists experienced in the performance and recording of Pärt’s music, to create a unique forum for the exchange of ideas, research, practices and creativity on the topics of sound and the sacred. The event is hosted by the Sacred Arts Initiative and the Arvo Pärt Project at St.

Fr. Erickson to Receive WTC Award

On Thursday, February 9, 2017, Archpriest John Erickson, professor emeritus and former dean of St. Vladimir’s Seminary, will receive the Washington Theological Consortium’s (WTC) Ecumenism Award during an ecumenical event held annually in Washington, D.C.: the “Prayer Service for Christian Unity.” Father John will also present the 9th Annual Figel Address on Ecumenism, this year titled, “What Divides, What Unites? Shifting Perceptions in Ecumenical Relations.”

Orthodox-Catholic Prayer for Unity & Life

On Monday, January 23, 2017, at 7 p.m., St. Vladimir’s Seminary will co-sponsor an “Orthodox-Catholic Prayer for Unity and Life” event at the Parish of St. John Nepomucene and St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. Other sponsors include the host parish and the Parish of St. Vincent Ferrer and St. Catherine of Sienna. An Orthodox Christian service, the “Akathist for the Unborn,” and a Roman Catholic service, the “Divine Mercy Chaplet,” will be held during the evening.

Estonian Chamber Choir

The Arvo Pärt Project (AAP) at St. Vladimir’s Seminary and Sacred Music in a Sacred Space will present an All-Arvo Pärt Program performed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir on Wednesday, February 1, at 7 p.m. at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, NYC. The concert will be conducted by Kaspars Putninš, artistic director and chief conductor of the choir, with K. Scott Warren, artistic director at St. Ignatius, as organist.

Inaugural Met Kallistos Lecture

January 13, 2017

On Friday, January 13, 2017, Archpriest John Behr, dean and professor of Patristics at St. Vladimir’s Seminary, will present his inaugural lecture as holder of the Metropolitan Kallistos Chair in Orthodox Theology at the Amsterdam Centre for Orthodox Theology (ACOT) in the Vrije Universiteit (VU). Father John’s lecture, titled, “The Paschal Gospel: Reading John in Early and Eastern Christianity,” will be posted on the Seminary’s website after it is presented.

Public Study: Melito’s Paschal Sermon

Devotees of the church fathers will have the pleasure of hearing Archpriest John Behr, dean and professor of Patristics at St. Vladimir’s Seminary, explicate the Paschal Sermon of Melito, second century exegete and apologist who served as bishop of Sardis near Lydia, Asia Minor.

The event, hosted by the Amsterdam Center for Orthodox Theology (ACOT), is the first in a new series about Orthodox theology open to the general public.

The study will take place at the Orthodox Parish Amersfoort, Matthias Withoosstraat 34, 3812 ST Amersfoort, on Friday, December 9, 2016. Coffee and tea will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the study will start at 7:00 p.m. and end around 9:00 p.m.

A St. Vladimir’s Seminary’s select choir—made up of students, alumni, student spouses, and community members and led by Robin Freeman, director of Music at SVOTS—will be singing Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Dormition (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese) in Southampton, NY on Sunday, November 6, 2016, at 10 a.m.

The Very Reverend Dr. Alexander Rentel, the John and Paraskeva Skvir Lecturer in Practical Theology at the Seminary, will be accompanying the choir and concelebrating with Protopresbyter Alexander Kartloutsos, rector of the parish.
