On Saturday, February 10, 2018, St. Vladimir’s Seminary Chorale commenced its “Orthodox Masterpieces” series, a musical endeavor that invites the public to hear beautifully composed hymns in their proper setting: communal worship. To inaugurate the series, the Chorale sang Great Vespers in Three Hierarchs Chapel, featuring select compositions by Alumnus Archpriest Sergei Glagolev. Robin Freeman, director of Music at the Seminary, conducted the singers, and Archpriest Alexander Rentel, chapel ecclesiarch, presided at the service, assisted by seminarians Dn. Larry Soper and Dn. Herman Fields.

Our seminary’s oldest living alumnus, the Very Reverend Paul Shafran (Class of 1945), was honored on Saturday, October 28, 2017, along with his gracious wife, Matushka Mary, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of Fr. Paul’s ordination to the Holy Priesthood, the couple’s 70th wedding anniversary, and their faithful service to the Church. Although the celebratory event for the Shafrans was held in October, the actual anniversary date of Fr. Paul’s ordination is December 28, and their wedding anniversary date is November 27.

Hundreds of friends and alumni attended our annual open house, Orthodox Education Day, which this year had the timely theme, “Modern Martyrs: Christians of the Middle East and North Africa.” Explicating the theme in an eloquent and informative keynote address was biblical scholar the Reverend Dr. George Parsenios, associate professor of New Testament, Princeton Theological Seminary, and sessional professor of New Testament at St. Vladimir’s.

The Reverend Dr. John Chryssavgis, archdeacon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, presented the 33rd Annual Father Alexander Schmemann Memorial Lecture titled, “Toward the Great and Holy Council: Retrieving a Culture of Conciliarity and Consensus” to an engaged, capacity crowd.

On the Saturday afternoon before the start of Great Lent, the Metropolitan Philip Auditorium was filled to capacity for a book launch hosted by St. Vladimir's Seminary Press (SVS Press). The event celebrated the release of the first title in the groundbreaking "Coptic Studies Series," titled The Life of Repentance and Purity.

On Sunday, December 6, the Three Hierarchs Chapel community enjoyed a favorite St. Vladimir's tradition when they sang a collection of carols and then welcomed "St. Nicholas" to campus. The carol "All who love Nicholas the saintly" ushered in the good saint, whose identity was hidden under his flowing white "beard." During the celebration, grown ups and kids alike also enjoyed a potluck meal, and St. Nicholas presented each child with a gift.
