Very Rev. Dr. Paul Tarazi

Sessional Professor of Old Testament

Fr. Paul Tarazi is Professor of Old Testament at St Vladimir's Seminary, where he teaches a full range of scriptural courses in Old and New Testament, as well as Biblical Hebrew and Greek, and academic Arabic. He has taught at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, and at St. John of Damascus Institute in Balamand, Lebanon. In addition to numerous scholarly articles, Fr. Tarazi's publications include a three–volume Introduction to the Old Testament, a four–volume Introduction to the New Testament; biblical commentaries on 1 Thessalonians and Galatians, and commentaries on Genesis, Romans, 1 Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians and Philemon, Ezekiel, Joshua, and 2 Corinthians which are part of the St. John Chrysostom Bible Commentary Series for Preaching and Teaching published by the Orthodox Center for the Advancement of Biblical Studies (OCABS). He has also authored Land and Covenant, a detailed study of the concept of the land/earth in the Old Testament and New Testament, a book commissioned by Archbishop Philip Saliba, Metropolitan of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. His work also includes complete audio commentaries on both the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Fr. Tarazi has travelled widely to speak about scripture and related topics, and has represented the Orthodox Church at ecumenical gatherings. He is known for his dynamic speaking style and his ability to hold an audience's interest while explaining complex matters of scriptural interpretation in layman's terms. His books have received accolades for their ability to explain the latest results of specialized scholarly studies—as well as Fr. Tarazi's own original research—in terms understandable to the general public.

In October 2010, Fr. Tarazi was honored with a Festschrift, sponsored by the Bible in the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Traditions unit of the Society of Biblical Literature, to celebrate his 40 years of teaching. The three-volume Festschrift publication in his honor will include 30 articles written by bishops, priests, academic deans, professors, and independent researchers and scholars, many of whom were students of Fr. Paul. The first volume, Festschrift in Honor of Professor Paul Nadim Tarazi: Studies in the Old Testament, published by Peter Lang, was released in 2012.
