The Managing Director (MD) is responsible for the strategic vision of SVS Press and day-to-day management of acquisition, contract agreements, editorial processes,production, marketing and sales of SVS Press product, royalties, and bookstore operations.
The MD actively engages with and forges relationships with key stakeholders in the broader Orthodox community, media outlets, and academic spheres to develop, drive, and implement the growth and reputation of SVS Press, worldwide. This position is responsible for direct management of all SVS Press staff, as well as maintaining relationships with printers, contractors, distributors, and partners. The MD prepares and implements all strategic and financial initiatives, monitors progress of annual revenue targets, ensures the highest possible quality of SVS Press product and service, and works closely with the Chief Finance Officer for financial oversight.

This role is expected to grow SVS Press revenues by at least 15-20% each year, and maintain a healthy profit margin of no less than 25%, and reports directly to the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO).

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and manages, in coordination with the CAO and CFO, the annual budget and all financial targets.
  • Schedules and chairs the SVS Press Advisory Committee meetings, and is a member of the SVS Press Board Committee.
  • Oversees the bookstore operations, warehousing, shipping and bookstore staff.
  • Oversees editorial staff and editorial process.
  • Develops and executes marketing campaigns, production and distribution of catalogs, and manages all advertising in print and digital media.
  • Monitors all marketing and promotional activities to maximize efficiencies, budget, and return on investment.
  • Explores and establishes new sales markets and distribution channels.
  • Leads and coordinates with international distributors to ensure timely releases and accurate book listings.
  • Monitors consistency of branding and messaging across all channels, under direction of CAO.
  • Oversees the maintenance and ongoing improvements of the Press website, Amazon, Bright Pearl, Lighting Source, social media, and all other major sales and promotional systems or platforms.
  • Oversees the production and maintenance of all print publications and digital media such as audiobooks, ebooks, music.
  • Ensures accurate and clean data across systems and products, focusing on metadata, book descriptions, CIP/LCCN/LIC data, ISBNS, etc.
  • Determines and coordinates appropriate staffing at trade shows and conferences as a vendor/bookseller.
  • Coordinates with the advancement team on all initiatives, including book subventions, SVS Press endowment fundraising, and all other activities determined by CAO.
  • Oversees royalty tracking, author copies, royalty statements and payments and ensures accuracy and timeliness of communication with royalty beneficiaries.
  • Oversees the organization and maintenance of the archive of publishing contracts, licensing agreements, translation agreements, rights contracts, etc. for all authors, editors, translators, and illustrators.
  • Coordinates with the Academic Dean for the publication and circulation of the St Vladimir’ Theological Quarterly (SVTQ), including managing subscription entities, subscribers, editorial process, etc.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business, business administration, marketing, sales or related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience as managing director, marketing director, or related title.
  • Strong editorial and proof-reading skills; attention to detail.
  • Up-to-date on the latest industry trends; able to articulate trends and potential clearly and confidently.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel).
  • Proficient in navigating and utilizing systems such as Bright Pearl, Amazon, Lighting Source, Big Commerce, or has initiative to become proficient.
  • Familiar with legalities of publishing, intellectual property, rights, and contracts.
  • Strong knowledge of the SVS Press brand and product; understanding of the company and its position in the market/industry/Church.
  • Previous experience with media and public relations.
  • Able to travel frequently.
  • Experience in leading and mentoring a team of people.
  • Able to analyze problems and strategize for better solutions.
  • Superior judgment and diplomatic skills.
  • A go-getter with strong initiative to get the job done.
  • Strong knowledge of and adherence to Eastern Orthodox faith, practice, and Tradition.

This position is full time, includes benefits, and can be done remotely (at the discretion of the CAO). Normal business hours are 8am–4pm during the summer and 830am-5pm during the school year. Availability on weekends and frequent travel is required. Salary is commensurate with experience.
