Fall 2020 Campus Reopening

The campus of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary (SVOTS) is open for course instruction, residential student housing, meals and other student services for the Fall 2020 Semester.

SVOTS is committed to the health and safety of its seminarians, faculty, staff, and community members. In compliance with New York State directives (which are subject to change), and after consultation with experts and input from Seminary stakeholders, the Seminary has made necessary adjustments to campus life and procedures during the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Among other safety precautions, masks, social distancing, proper hygiene, testing and regular screenings are mandated on campus; classrooms are arranged for social distancing (students also have the option to attend sessions online); requirements for chapel attendance will be modified; cleaning and disinfecting of personal and common spaces will occur regularly throughout the semester; the Bookstore will remain closed to all walk-in customers (but orders may still be placed online, at SVSPress.com); and the Seminary’s Three Hierarchs Chapel will be closed to anyone outside the Seminary community.

CARES Act

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act was signed into law on March 27, 2020, providing approximately $14 billion in relief funding for higher education institutions through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). Institutions such as St. Vladimir's Seminary were allocated funding from this act by the U.S. Department of Education and encouraged to apply for these funds by submitting a grant proposal to the Department of Education. St. Vladimir's applied for and received a grant in the amount of $475,000 under CARES Act Section 18004(a)(3).

The use of these funds is broad and includes providing additional emergency grants to students and covering costs related to operating additional class sections and classrooms to enable social distancing as well as costs involved in disinfecting, cleaning, and providing PPE to students, faculty, and staff. The grant also allows for replacement of lost revenues by the institution due to reduced enrollment and cancelled revenue-generating events and for the purchase or upgrade of equipment to enable remote learning, including training for faculty and staff on such equipment.

Institutions receiving grant funding under CARES Act Section 18004(a)(3) are required to post a quarterly report of the grant funds expended during the quarter. You can find our reports below.
