34th Annual Schmemann Lecture

[img_assist|nid=20126|title=|desc=Dr. Lewis Patsavos, retired professor of Canon Law and director of Field Education at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology|link=none|align=left|width=231|height=285]On Monday, January 30, 2017, Dr. Lewis Patsavos, retired professor of Canon Law and director of Field Education at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, will deliver the 34 th Annual Father Alexander Schmemann Lecture, titled: “Reflections of a Canonist: Account of a Teaching Ministry Spanning Four Decades." Dr. Patsavos earned his Doctorate in Theology from the University of Athens, Greece in 1974, and he subsequently taught at Holy Cross for 40 years. His dual responsibilities of teaching Orthodox Canon Law and directing the school’s Field Education Program enabled him to experience the pastoral nature of the canons contextually in ministerial settings.

Panel Discussion: “Rethinking Sacred Arts”

[img_assist|nid=20401|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=300|height=224]On Saturday, September 17, 2016, at 7 p.m., St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary will host a panel discussion titled, “Rethinking Sacred Arts.” The event, which is open to the public, will feature 11 renowned international scholars and artists, drawing on their expertise in the study, practice, and interpretation of the visual arts, music, rhetoric, and aesthetics. The panel discussion will top off a weekend-long “Sacred Arts Symposium,” which is the first in a series of events planned between Fall 2016 and Spring 2018 by the Seminary, all of which are a part of the Seminary’s Sacred Arts Initiative (SAI). These SAI events are funded by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, and are designed to explore the Seminary’s contribution to the study and practice of the Sacred Arts.

Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Dormition, Southampton, NY

[img_assist|nid=21246|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=300|height=237]A St. Vladimir’s Seminary’s select choir—made up of students, alumni, student spouses, and community members and led by Robin Freeman, director of Music at SVOTS—will be singing Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Dormition (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese) in Southampton, NY on Sunday, November 6, 2016, at 10 a.m. The Very Reverend Dr. Alexander Rentel, the John and Paraskeva Skvir Lecturer in Practical Theology at the Seminary, will be accompanying the choir and concelebrating with Protopresbyter Alexander Kartloutsos, rector of the parish.

SVS Press Book Launch: “Patriarch Kirill" volume

SVS Press fans in the Midwest will have an opportunity to attend a book launch of the latest Press offering, Patriarch Kirill in His Own Words, recently released on the occasion of the 70 th birthday of His Holiness Kirill, patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. The new volume is part of the Press’s Profile Series, edited by Archpriest Chad Hatfield, and is made up of short excerpts from Patriarch Kirill’s homilies, articles, media interviews, and formal speeches, laid out in a “daily reading” format. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear first-hand about Fr. Chad’s engagement with Patriarch Kirill, which resulted in this extraordinary volume.
