An institution of and for the Church under the omophorion of the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), St Vladimir’s Seminary provides theological instruction and formation for men and women preparing themselves as candidates for the ordained and lay ministries of the Church. Faithful to its OCA heritage, the Seminary fosters pan-Orthodox collaboration with all canonical Eastern Orthodox jurisdictions that entrust us with the formation of their seminarians. We also assist in the training of students belonging to the Oriental Orthodox traditions—Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian, Eritrean, Malankara, Syriac.

Our life is centered on a 12-acre residential campus in Yonkers (Crestwood), NY. For us, this residential setting is not merely a convenience; it is, rather, an integral part of theological and pastoral formation, providing the context in which we learn accountability, humility, reconciliation, and hospitality. Orthodox theological formation is never narrowly vocational or purely academic; it is a means of reaching maturity. In the shared life of our campus community, we are nourished daily by the scriptural and Eucharistic Word of God; we become aware of our own shortcomings and are challenged to extend beyond our area of comfort and to love our brothers and sisters in the complexities of everyday interactions, learning to share strengths rather than boast in them. This rigorous and demanding environment prepares clergy, lay leaders, and scholars to be servants of Christ willing and able to engage the realities of the world in and outside the Church.
The Three Pillars of Formation. The St Vladimir’s Seminary model of teaching in service to the Church strives to be Christ-centered, student-focused, and education-driven. Our residential model for M.Div. and M.A. students is likewise established upon three interrelated pillars that integrate the classroom, the chapel, and “the field”:
- Academic
We maintain high standards of scholarly research, reading, and analysis, ensuring that our graduates can approach and learn the Tradition with discernment and communicate the Gospel as a living truth for the contemporary world. - Liturgical
Worship is the heart of our Seminary’s life. By following the Church’s daily and annual cycles in the Three Hierarchs Chapel and other dedicated sacred spaces on campus, students are fed and instructed, realizing that academic and scholarly pursuit must be understood through the lens of, and cannot be separated from, prayer. - Pastoral
Theology is simultaneously academic and pastoral. Through specialized field education in hospitals, prisons, parishes, and other similar settings, students put their academic and liturgical learning into practice.

The St Vladimir’s Seminary Press. As the largest and most active publisher of Orthodox Christian books in the English-speaking world, St Vladimir’s Seminary Press is a cornerstone of the Seminary's mission to inspire the world. With over 500 titles in print, the Press provides high-quality theological, spiritual, and liturgical resources that serve the Academy, the Church, and the individual seeker alike.
The Online School of Theology. The Seminary’s reach extends beyond our physical campus through the Online School of Theology, making the treasures of Orthodox theological thought accessible to a national and global student body of priests, lay ministers, faithful Orthodox, and inquiring catechumens. The Online School of Theology serves as a vital tool for:
- Outreach and witness: witnessing to the truth of the Gospel by providing resources for late and lay vocations, church musicians, and catechists.
- Global access: extending the expertise of our selected faculty to serve those who seek a better understanding of their faith but cannot participate in residential programs.
- Preparatory learning: offering foundational courses for those considering future graduate study.
The Institute of Sacred Arts. Founded upon the study of the Liturgy, and of the visual, musical, and rhetorical arts, the Institute of Sacred Arts at St Vladimir’s Seminary explores the mutual relationship between theology and the Church's arts. The Institute finds expression in the Seminary’s curriculum, in academic symposia and conferences, in publications and cultural events. In these ways it contributes to the work of those who practice and reflect on the sacred arts, engages people and institutions of all backgrounds with Orthodox Christian artistic tradition, and inspires wider public interest in spirituality and the arts.
